2011 Results

2011 was Otakon Game Show's best year yet!
We didn't have any technical problems.
The audience completely filled the room, which has a capacity of around 600. Yay!

We're already planning for 2012. If you want to suggest a new category for us to try out, now's the time.

2010 Gameshow Results

We had a blast presenting the Otakon Game Show again this year and we hope everyone had a great time watching and participating.

Our winner this year was Jennifer Fu

Second Place went to Jennifer K.

The now-famous (at least for the Otakon Game Show) Doug Krieger came in third.

Henry Kim placed fourth.

Congratulations to all!

I will try to update this blog a little more frequently this year. Not a high bar to reach as there were nearly 0 posts since last year.

Otakon Game Show 2009 Winners!

We had a blast presenting the Otakon Game Show and we hope everyone had a great time watching and participating.

In first place for the third year in a row was Doug Krieger.

Second place went to Anthony Lopez.

Third went to Gavin Donaldson.

And bringing up the rear with his gutsy but incorrect final round wager was Henry Kim.

Our SMS round 1 winner was (seth) and our round 2 winner was Jedite333 aka Saker Alexander.

Otakon Game Show 2009 Survey #3

And we've hit the final stretch with the last of our surveys. Otakon Game Show 2009 Survey #3 is up for your surveying pleasure. This survey will end on July 16th, ie, the day before we leave for Otakon!

As a reminder, Survey #1 ends on Monday so if you haven't filled it out yet, please do so now. We've gone past 100 responses which is great and we've gotten some pretty awesome responses to the questions.

Survey #2 ends on July 13th.

Thanks to everyone that's helped us by filling out and spreading the survey. We really appreciate it and hope that this will be the best Otakon Game Show yet!

Otakon Game Show 2009 Survey #2

Rolling right along, Otakon Game Show 2009 Survey #2 is now up and active. It will run until July 13th. As before, please fill out the survey only once, but also spread it to your friends and ask them to fill it out also. We want to get as many responses as possible.

As a reminder, Otakon Game Show 2009 Survey #1 will run until June 29th. We're a little under 100 responses so far so if you haven't filled it out yet, please do so.

The final survey will also go up next weekend as we start getting close to crunch time.

We're back! The "Survey Says" category will make a return for the 2009 Game Show. The first of our surveys is available at http://www.cjas.org/limesurvey/index.php?sid=68645. This survey will be up until June 29th.

Please only fill out the survey once, but feel free to tell your friends and have them fill it out also.

We're getting a bit of a late start this year so we'll be starting new surveys every 2 weeks. Put your favorite RSS reader on this website to be notified when new surveys go up.

The 08 show was a huge success!

We had a great Otakon and the game show was a lot of fun.

It started off very smoothly, Otakon Staffer Chris (previous quiz-sensei) double checked we would have the equipment we needed in the room and Otakon Staffer Mike wrangled up some awesome prizes for us. Otakon Translator Lillian got a special favor from two of the guests to add to the prize pool. Kazuko Tadano drew the Otakon Mascots for the first place winner and Masao Maruyama signed a pencil board for the second place contestant. We spread 400 quarter-cards around the ledges in the convention space to get the word out, above and beyond the information already on the schedule and in the program guide.

At 4pm on Saturday we had the qualification quiz. A record number of people showed up to take it, and we ran out of quizzes despite having a hundred of them. A dozen otaku had to write the answers on blank paper as James read out the questions to them. Good thing they perservered because one of them made it onto the show. The quiz was a bit harder than I had hoped it would be, with a top score of 5 out of 15, and most players getting only one point. It will be a little bit easier next year.

When it came time for the main game show to start we ran into trouble. The previous occupants of the panel room were still in there and we didn't get to start until thirty minutes later. Otakon Staffer Omar took extra steps to reduce any further delay by having the crew ready to move the necessary equipment around right away. Our technical team set up fast, but had some unexpected problems synching up the wiimotes. Even after that was solved one of the projectors wasn't configured right. In addition one of the cables wasn't the right type, causing us to have greatly reduced resolution to the projectors.

To save time and keep the audience entertained, I went through the quiz answers and brought up our contestants. Amanda, Doug, Rand, and Yan were the top four present scorers on the quiz. Lexy and Suzanne you should have been there, you qualified!

With everything ready we began the show. This year, for the first time, the entire audience could play along using their cell phones. Players registered their handles and answered questions by sending text messages. We had over one-hundered people registered and playing along!

After two rounds and twelve categories totaling sixty questions Doug had a sizable lead going into the final question. He bet half his score and was the only player to get the answer right. He finished with a huge score and is the 2008 Otakon Game Show Champion!

Congratulations to Doug and all of our contestants. The first and second place play-by-text players, "Bigthumbs," and "Jedite333" also got great prizes.

We'll be back next year, don't miss it!

Gameshow times and locations

Hey, we're still alive. Survey #3 was completed and the prizes were awarded. From the three surveys, we got plenty of good material to stump our contestants with.

In addition, the Gameshow qualifying quiz and Gameshow itself have been scheduled. You can get the full Otakon schedule here.

The Gameshow qualifying quiz will be held on Saturday in Workshop 1 (Room 339-340) from 4PM to 5PM.

The Otakon Gameshow itself will be held on Saturday in Panel 3(Room 318-323) starting at 10PM.

Any changes in the schedule (hopefully there won't be any) will be posted here and at the con.

The questions get ever more bizarre and several of them were based on suggestions from survey #2.

Survey #2 results

We had 135 responses for survey 2 and we are randomly selecting 2 of the respondents as our raffle winners. We're in the process of contacting the winners. Survey 3 will be up in a few days as we're falling a little behind.

As for one of the survey results, we asked who you thought Tenchi should hook up with. The result will probably surprise no one as an overwhelming majority thought that Ryoko was his best match at 46%. Aeka followed at 19% and Sasami at 13%. Wasyuu and Kiyone both managed 8% and Ryoohki pulled 4%. Perhaps a little surprisingly, Mihoshi came in last at 2%.

Thank you to everyone that participated in Otakon Gameshow Survey #1. We managed a little over 100 responses and had some really interesting responses.

Over the next few days we will report some of the results (but we'll be keeping others secret for the gameshow itself of course).

Welcome to the team blog for the Otakon Gameshow. We'll be using this blog to keep you (the fan, or possible future or past contestant) informed of our nefarious activities. We won't be telling you any answers, though!

We've started working on improvements and questions for the 2008 gameshow already. If you have any ideas, please post a comment and we'll see if we can use it.

Last year we had a category called "Survey Says" wherein we asked people a question and got the most common answer. Contestants tried to match that answer for points. (Like Family Feud.) This year we will be doing or polling online - whoa! Do we have awesome technology or what? Well don't look at me, other team members handle the fancy stuff, thank them. Anyway, watch this space for the survey and other updates.
